One dog, one railway, one heck of an adventure!

Neilston

Neilston

Station 154

Rudy visited Neilston on
Monday, 3rd April 2023
arriving at 13:34 on a train from Glasgow Central.

Neilston Station

Originally an intermediate stop on the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway opened in 1903 Neilston is now the terminus of it’s eponymous branch of the Cathcart Circle lines. Trains still continue west from here but only into a short turnback siding to change platforms before their return journey.

The line was electrified in 1962 at the same time as the onwards section was closed to passenger services and Neilston itself was at risk of closure under 1980s British Rail plans to reduce the railway even further. The cutback plans were cutback and while the original buildings were demolished the station itself survived.

380111 leaves Neilston empty to switch into the opposite platform for it’s return to Glasgow.

Neilston is around 30 minutes by train from Glasgow Central and is listed as a staffed station with toilet facilities available.

There are step-free ramps to both platforms with access between them via the adjacent road bridge.
