Rudy's Railway Adventures

One dog, one railway, one heck of an adventure!

Golspie

Golspie

Station 82

Rudy arrived at 16:09 on a train from Inverness and stayed in the town for a short holiday break.

Golspie Station

Golspie was opened in 1868 as the terminus of the Sutherland Railway. Three years later in 1871 the Duke of Sutherland used his own money to extend the railway further north. The station building is original from this time and after being renovated in the early 2000s it’s now a four bedroomed holiday rental home.

Golspie Town

Main Street, Golspie

Golspie lies on the North Sea coast of Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands. It was a planned village to resettle folk removed from small inland settlements during the Highland Clearances. A harbour was built around 1805 to improve income from fishing but now the town seems to be working well to reimagine itself as a quiet tourist destination.

The “Mannie”

Ben Bhraggie as seen from Golspie

“The Mannie”, a monument to the first Duke of Sutherland, overlooks Golspie from the nearby summit of Ben Bhraggie. There’s a plaque near the harbour that does a good job of explaining the contentious nature of the monument celebrating a now widely criticised figure.

Click to zoom and read the plaque.

Golspie is just over two hour’s journey from Inverness on the Far North Line. There are 8 trains a day here with half heading towards Thurso & Wick and the others south to Inverness.
