Rudy's Railway Adventures

One dog, one railway, one heck of an adventure!

Cardonald: Craigton Cemetery

Rudy at Craigton Cemetery

Rudy’s walk from Cardonald Station started with a wander through Craigton Cemetery just five minutes away. The 30 acre cemetery was established in 1871 with the “intention to create a first class garden cemetery” for the richer burials from Govan & Partick districts.

In 1875 Craigton Cemetery reinterred individuals and families displaced from Blackfriars Churchyard on High Street when it was sold to the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company.

There are 150,000 interments at Craigton Cemetery with the older, more sloped section appearing less formally maintained that the sections closer to the Crematorium,

There are good solid accessible paths around the cemetery and Rudy was mostly keen to just get on with walking these to find where I’d planned lunch rather than exploring and waiting for photographs to be taken!

Glasgow City Council have produced a leaflet extensively detailing the personal history of many of the more interesting graves at the cemetery. It can be downloaded in pdf form as the Craigton Cemetery Heritage Trail
