Station 125

arriving at 12 noon on a bus!

Glasgow Central Station

The first Glasgow Central station was opened in 1879 but quickly became congested with both too many people and too many trains! Expanded in 1890 and then completely rebuilt from 1901 to 1905 (with quite a few upgrades since!) it is the busiest station in Scotland and the 2nd busiest in the UK outside of London.

318252 departs Glasgow Central for Larkhall.
This was an unusual "official visit" because we didn't use any trains, we took the opportunity to visit the station and take photos of the high level platforms when it was quiet due to industrial action taking place. It still counts.
Looking south from Glasgow Central’s high level platforms

The station is just north of the River Clyde which means all high level trains head out across the Caledonian Railway Bridge which was once the widest railway bridge in the world – at it’s widest 62.5 metres (205 feet) it can carry up to ten tracks! With multiple routes via points & switches we think it’s the most complicated looking bit of railway in Scotland!

We’ve Been Here Before.

Rudy visited Glasgow Central low level platforms for his very first journey on our All The (Scottish) Stations challenge. We’ve used Glasgow Central lots of times since then and caught more than fifty trains to & from here so far! It’s a very busy station and I guess that’s why we don’t often take photos but we did find these two from the archives!

Glasgow Central is unsurprisingly fully staffed. There is step-free access to all platforms with a full range of passenger assistance available if needed.

A water refill point is available alongside free toilets and separate accessible toilet & changing places option.
