Rudy's Railway Adventures

One dog, one railway, one heck of an adventure!

Easterhouse: West Maryston Woodland

An early morning walk in a community woodland & meadow before searching for evidence of an abandoned section of the Monkland Canal.

West Maryston Community Woodland

This community woodland area is on the opposite side of the M8 motorway from Easterhouse Station just a short walk across a road bridge with wide pavements. Very dense trees mean the path feels quiet with plenty of shade.

There’s also a more open meadow area with mown paths through the longer grass and rosebay willowherb. These are a particular favourite with Rudy thinking he’s a great pathfinder running along the cut spaces!

The Monkland Canal was here.

The Monkland Canal route from here westward into Glasgow was obliterated when it was used to build the M8 motorway. To the east at Coatbridge the canal still holds water and real towpaths but this short section is completely abandoned. It needs better investigation than me & Rudy to find any real evidence of its past though despite our path following the route.

The walkable part of the abandoned canal ends at the Netherhouse Road bridge over the North Clyde railway line. Luckily that wasn’t our planned train home!

An Odd Ghost Street

Rogerfield Road is sandwiched between the woodland and the motorway. Old maps show it on a slightly different layout before the motorway was built but with nothing much here. Despite that it was kept as a road adopted by Glasgow City Council. With no vehicle access and no residential or commercial properties it makes our list of Ghost Streets!

Old Easterhouse

The only part of the original Easterhouse village that remains is the pub, the M8 motorway was built on the route of the Monkland Canal from here into Glasgow.
