Stromeferry Station
Opened in 1870 as the terminus of the Dingwall and Skye Railway where passengers changed here onto a steamer boat service onwards to Skye. Twenty-seven years after opening the line was extended to Kyle meaning the loss of the island ferries. Then in 1970 “local” Loch Carron ferries stopped – the traffic stolen by new roads which now sign-posted the village as “Strome Ferry (no ferry)”.
Such a peaceful station now with only a dozen or so passengers each week it’s amazing to think that the Stromeferry Riot that took place here in 1883 was so serious it was discussed in parliament in London! Two hundred fishermen occupied the station to prevent fish being transported on their Sabbath Sunday even requiring the army to calm things!!
Stromeferry is 2 hours 15 minutes by train from Inverness or 25 minutes from Kyle of Lochalsh.
The single platform has step free access. There is a small waiting shelter at one end but no other facilities
