Rudy's Railway Adventures

One dog, one railway, one heck of an adventure!

Kirkwood Viaduct

Our walk from Kirkwood through the Luggie Glen took us under the Kirkwood Viaduct. I can’t tell you anything about the viaduct other than it carries the railway high over the Luggie nearer to Bargeddie Station than Kirkwood. It’s a very grand viaduct to have so little to discover about it in our usual research places!

Rudy seems very bemused by my interest in taking his photo with all the railway viaducts we see!

Kirkwood Viaduct is at the western end of the Luggie Glen path. It’s a very neglected entrance to the path on this, the Bargeddie, side with lots of rubbish and a warning sign “slow down, path surface uneven and broken”. Don’t judge this book by it’s cover though as once you run the corner it’s a nice little walk.

What’s In A Name?

Possibly because it’s well hidden from the “town side” by trees and the under-appreciated path below it, this seems to be a forgotten viaduct – even the name has been misplaced. The HES Canmore entry lists “Bargeddie Viaduct” but railway maps use “Kirkwood Viaduct”. I had presumed is was just the Luggie Viaduct after the water & glen it crosses.

from Historic Environment Scotland’s Canmore entry labelled “Bargeddie Viaduct”
Details from Quail Track Diagrams labelled “Kirkwood Viaduct”

After long consideration (at least four quick google searches) we’ve decided to go with the Railway name of Kirkwood Viaduct even if that did throw up photos of the Starrucca Viaduct in Pennsylvania, US. We don’t think anyone will confuse the two.
