Kintore

Station 72

Rudy arrived at 11:56 on a train from Aberdeen and returned on the 13:33 departure.
He visited again on Saturday 24th July.

Kintore is Scotland’s newest railway station. It was opened by ScotRail in October 2020 with little fanfare due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions at the time. It’s just a fifteen minute journey from Aberdeen on the line towards Inverurie and Inverness. Kintore is a small town of almost 5,000 people, a proposed housing development in 2003 revealed the Deer’s Den archaeological site which has evidence of Iron Age roundhouses and a large Roman Camp.

Vintage details

The original Kintore station situated about 500m south and opened in 1854. For ninety years there was a junction here for the branch line to nearby Alford but the station was closed during the Beeching cuts in 1964. Items from the original station were rediscovered while plans for the new station were underway and so two original benches & an old station sign were restored.

Kintore Revisit

Rudy ended up visiting Kintore twice in the same month! His first visit was cut short due to the day becoming a lot hotter than we expected based on the forecast. We got far enough to visit the town the first time but the interesting hill was just too far a walk with it being so hot even in the shade. Our second visit was noticeably cooler despite the clear blue skies and we managed to get a good explore around Tuach Hill.
