Six miles east from Dundee, Monifieth was opened in 1838 by the Dundee and Arbroath Railway. In 1898 timber station buildings were added to both platforms. They're gone now but there's a story behind that! By the mid 1980s the buildings were unused, boarded up. British Rail wanted demolish them as expensive to maintain and increasingly targeted by vandalism. But then in 1988 a railway preservation society stepped in and the eastbound building was carefully dismantled and moved to feature in the Glasgow Garden Festival. And then it was moved once again! Monifieth station building is now preserved at Birkhall station on the heritage Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway.
