Monklands Canal
A walk between Drumgelloch and Coatbridge Central stations.
Rudy's Canal Adventures again!
Continuing along the North Calder Heritage Trail we joined the Monklands Canal towpath at it's southern origin where it's fed by the North Calder Water. Constructed between 1771 and 1794 the canal was closed to navigation in 1942 and then abandoned, culverted, and built over along much of its length. A major section is now the M8 motorway.
The towpath is maintained for walking & wheeling from Calderbank to Coatbridge though and while it's narrower than our local Forth & Clyde it's also much more rural and less busy.
