Limefield Viaduct & Falls
A walk at West Calder train station.
Limefield Viaduct is still in use by the railway as part of the Shotts Line between Edinburgh & Glasgow Central. It crosses the Harwood Water about a mile from West Calder station.
Limefield Falls is a manmade construction from around 1875 built specially to create the waterfall. Incredibly unusual for a time and place where water was an important power source for industry in Scotland! It's said the local estate owner at the time built this 8 foot weir in honour of his friend David Livingstone and his description of the mile wide and 350ft high Mosi-oa tunya (which he called Victoria Falls) in Zambia & Zimbabwe.
The larinier fish bypass was added in 2020 to help the return of lost species to the river so when we visited after a dry spell there was no waterfall never mind any thundering smoke 😅 There was a nice (possibly natural) tiny little falls close by though 🙂
