The Cancelled Trains Paradox

Trying to get from Glasgow to Aberdeen after a stormy January day didn't work out too well for us. Promised departures disappeared without information until we eventually caught a "cancelled" train back home!

The weather warning for Storm Isha had ended hours previously and all online checks showed trains successfully arriving at destinations — we expected a delayed journey but that was fine. It was only once we arrived at Queen Street that it became clear the ScotRail network was still overwhelmed by weather-related incidents. Public departure boards and systems powering online apps were simply wrong. Chaos reigned!

After waiting an hour for a train North to arrive & board we gave up and headed back home on a local service. The train we eventually caught was ironically showing as cancelled even as it departed and still cancelled after taking us safely home!
