River Kelvin & The Allander Walkway

A walk between Summerston and Milngavie stations.

Back in August I did an adventure walk that I'd wanted to do for years. Part one I put on Rudy's Railway Adventures page because it included looking for an old train station. This is part two that started with a barricaded bridge, then a thoroughly overgrown path, a very short nice little bit and then a very long monotonous finish along not even the right bit of water. It took all day to complete and was absolutely brilliant and so satisfying to finally complete the Kelvin & Allander Walkway!

When you're a couple hours into a walk and past halfway this is not what you want to see! Kelvin Walkway footbridge at Balmore Road (A879) is no longer in use šŸ™

Rudy didn't really understand why my spirits dropped at the big padlocked gate and I suddenly stopped being enthusiastic about the walk. It was a nice day and he would've been happy to picnic here!

All was not lost, cross the road bridge carefully (very busy road, no real pavement and there is a little gap in the fencing and traffic cones blocking the path at this side of the river. Very overgrown steps but on we go!

Rudy took quite a bit of persuading that this really was a path. It took a lot of convincing myself as well, five minutes in and I was wishing we had a guide with a machete to lead the way!

Once round the first bend the path steps away from the river slightly and becomes much easier to follow along the edge of this field. Rudy was tired from jumping through undergrowth, my legs were tired from getting tangled so much so this first clearer patch was the picnic spot.

See, it's a much clearer path alongside the fence...
Just up ahead there is where the Kelvin Walkway changes into the Allander Walkway as the Kelvin veers off to the right.

This was reassuring that we had come the right way after all, the first signs of a maintaned pathway even if the gate has long disappeared!

The Allander Water, about two miles from where it meets the River Kelvin. This is when I realised I'd been on an all-day River walk and not taken any photos of the river...

After a short section on road and deciding not to stop at the pub at Dobbies Garden Centre the Allander becomes very managed and runs in a long straight channel. It's not an interesting part of the walk...

This is the Prescott Bridge, it was built by soldiers from the Royal Engineer's Bomb Disposal Unit in 1990.
At this point Rudy is just humouring me because he really does think I'm lost and don't know the way home!

Lennox Park in Milngavie. This is as far as we go because from here on the path officially becomes the West Highland Way and we are NOT starting on that today!

This is the proof Rudy! Twenty years after deciding it would be a good idea I eventually walked along the river from Glasgow to Milngavie.
I was right, it was a good idea!

I don't often take photos of the trains we catch but this was a tough walk at times and the train home is ALWAYS the a good train!
