Kelvin Walkway to Balmuildy Woods

A walk at Summerston train station.

A Big Adventure walking from Maryhill to Milngavie

Part One: Starting at Summerston we walked 2.5 miles (4km) along a lesser used section of the River Kelvin Walkway to Balmuildy Woods.

A little detour via Maryhill Park to join the walkway and then we soon felt we were in the wilderness! At the end of August the path here is rather overgrown in many places and a little muddy in parts but it's a very peaceful river walk so close to the edge of Summerston and North Glasgow.

We had a our first picnic stop of the day where the walk opens up for a while before Balmuildy Wood. The path then becomes a woodland riverside affair - the terrain and scenery vary often with no long boring stretches here.

This part of our walk ended near the site of the first Summerston station but the very busy road and private driveway put us off wandering to find any proper evidence.

Balmore Road crosses the Kelvin at Balmuildy Wood and presents a bit of a barrier. The choice is to either retrace your steps back the way you came or to continue another three miles onwards along the Kelvin & Allander Water to Milngavie.
