Kay Park (Kilmarnock)

A walk at Kilmarnock train station.

At Kilmarnock we took a quick walk to Kay Park. The park contains the Kilmarnock Burns Monument which was completed for the opening of the park in 1879. The design ea much grander than the original idea due to surplus public subscriptions and the money used to create a museum around the memorial statue. The first editions of Robert Burns poetry were printed in Kilmarnock. The original monument & museum was almost completely destroyed by fire in 2004 after years of neglect. The rebuild was nominated in the Carbuncle Cup for ugly buildings although careful perspective and positioning of a small terrier improves its looks.
