Glasgow to Newcastle

Newcastle sneaks into our list of Scottish stations by having had a direct ScotRail service from Glasgow Central up until May 2022. Although operated by Northern Trains crew from Carlisle onwards no change of train was needed as the same class 156 unit covered the full journey.

156502 stands at Newcastle after its journey from Glasgow Central.

We joined the last ever 1E97 ScotRail train to Newcastle at Dumfries rather than do the whole four hour journey as this allowed Rudy to have his evening business walk & meal close to when he expected on a big adventure day!

Newcastle Station was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1850. It’s been modernised several times but the Victorian curved platforms and grand arched train shed design still remain as main features.

Newcastle is on the East Coast Main Line, 1.5 hours from Edinburgh or just under 3 hours from London.

The station covers a large area with 12 numbered platforms and usually saw between 8 to 9 Million yearly passengers before 2020.
