Laurencekirk
Station 79
Rudy arrived at 11:58 on a train from Aberdeen and returned on the 15:01 departure after a walk round Denlethen Wood.
Laurencekirk Station
The Aberdeen Railway Company opened Laurencekirk station in 1894 and it was closed by British Rail’s cost saving cuts in 1967. It was reopened in May 2009 with one of the original station buildings undergoing a full restoration and passenger numbers growing quickly to 100,000 each year.
When Laurencekirk was reopened the retaining wall on the southbound platform was rebuilt with pink granite and a mural of mosaics placed showing aspects of the town’s history. Rudy liked the lower placed station sign but wasn’t too happy at posing with the pig!
Laurencekirk Waiting Room
The original 1848 station building at Laurencekirk is a favourite. That it survived for forty years while the station was closed is remarkable and the restoration of the waiting room to still be in use is fantastic. Along with the wood flooring and fireplace there are good local history panels and a pair of preserved railway posters from before closure!
Laurencekirk is 30-35 minutes train journey from Aberdeen on the local stopping services to Montrose. Both platforms and the waiting room are accessible via ramps. There are no extra facilities at the station but the local history information boards are well worth making time to read.
