Station 106

arriving at 12:29 on a train from Glasgow Central.

Kirkwood Station

Opened in 1993 by British Rail during their development of the Whifflet Line, Kirkwood lies within it’s namesake area of Coatbridge around ten miles from Glasgow city centre.

334035 departing Kirkwood Station towards Whifflet.

Kirkwood was built new in 1993 but is considered a direct replacement of Langloan station which served the same area from 1866 until it’s closure in 1964.

Just two years after closing the nearby passenger station two tower blocks with flats for 170 families were built just south of the tracks. It’s incredible to think that roads were seen as everything needed to connect communities rather than future planning the railway!

Kirkwood is just under half an hour by train from Glasgow Central on trains towards Whifflet or Motherwell. There is ramp access to both platforms.

This is an unstaffed station with no facilities other than waiting shelters.
