Inverkip
Station 69
Rudy arrived at 10:42 on a train from Glasgow Central and returned on the 15:01 departure after walking to Lunderston Bay & back.
Inverkip is on the Firth of Clyde coast, a 45 minute journey from Glasgow Central on the Inverclyde Line towards Wemyss Bay. The station was originally opened in 1865 by the Greenock and Wemyss Bay Railway turning the village into a new seaside resort for day-trippers. During electrification work in the 1960’s the station was reduced to one platform for the remaining single line track.
In 2012 a nearby housing development meant increased access needs and a new footbridge with lift was installed. The footbridge is level with the top of the embankment on the non-platform side so required only one lift tower to be built!
Inverkip station sits at the top of Station Avenue which winds it’s way down to the village Main Street where a footbridge crosses the busy A78 road. The Kip Marina is ten minutes walk from the station, while the beach and Ardgowan Estate are only a little further along. It’s a steep hill back up to the station so don’t get caught having to run it at the last minute!
