Hamilton Central opened in 1876 when the Caledonian Railway extended the line from it’s Hamilton terminus across the River Avon to Ferniegair at the north end of what is now Chatelherault Country Park. This connection completed the “Hamilton Circle” which allowed South Lanarkshire collieries to send coal more directly to a larger number of steel & iron works than previously.

Hamilton Central underwent major renovations in 2016 with the addition of a modern footbridge and fully accessible lifts but one of the original 1900s station buildings remains intact at street level. It’s a long, long time since it was used by the railway though!

Hamilton Central is part of the Hamilton Interchange with the bus station part having been built on the land previously occupied by the station goods yard.

Hamilton Central is just over half an hour by train from Glasgow Central on trains towards Larkhall or Motherwell. There is a modern lift giving step-free access to both platforms.

There are toilets available but only when the ticket office is open.
