Fort Matilda Station
Fort Matilda opened in 1889 when the Caledonian Railway built its line to Gourock. It’s named after a coastal battery that defended the Clyde from the 1810s until it was demolished in the 1930s.
The station building at Fort Matilda is used as the base for the Greenock & District Model Railway Club.
Fort Matilda is on the Gourock branch of the Inverclyde Line, fast trains from Glasgow Central take thirty five minutes, slower stopping trains take about ten minutes longer. It’s just three minutes from the end of the line at Gourock.
Despite the wonderful station building, Fort Matilda is listed as unstaffed. There are no toilet facilities and step-free access is to the Glasgow bound platform only, returning requires going over the footbridge to exit the station.
