Dunrobin Castle Station

Dunrobin Castle railway station was first opened by the Duke Of Sutherland’s Railway in 1870 to serve it’s namesake castle. The Sutherland Railway had terminated at Golspie so the 3rd Duke used his own money to extend the line and ensure his family & guests had their own private railway station.

The station building is a replacement from 1902 and while the duke insisted on it being made from local Scots pine it was built to an English Arts & Craft design.

The station was private use only until it closed in 1965. Still privately owned by the Sutherland Estate it began reopening for public use during the summer months only since 1985.

Dunrobin Castle is a summer only request stop just over two hour’s journey from Inverness on the Far North Line. There’s a high gap between the platform and trains but movable steps are available for those who need.

NOTE: No trains are timetabled to stop (even by request) at Dunrobin Castle over the winter months from around the end of October until May.

Dunrobin Castle station is unique in Scotland for many reasons with a number of dedicated websites & pages dedicated to it. One of our favourites we found is at https://scotlandrailholiday.com/dunrobin/index.htm
