Dumfries Station
Dumfries’ first railway station opened in 1848 by the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway. Two years later the line north to Glasgow was opened and then branches to Castle Douglas and Stranraer were added. This meant the station was redeveloped more than once until it’s current version.
The current Dumfries station dates from 1859 with buildings and canopies on both platforms Category B listed. Unfortunately with the West Coast Mainline taking a much shorter route from England to Glasgow, Dumfries is a very grand station for very rural feeling train services.
Contradicting the rural feel of the route through Dumfries it’s part of the Glasgow South Western Line and sees the only cross-border train services into England operated by ScotRail. As the first time we’ve travelled this route it was a big important adventure for Rudy requiring dinner on the platform after his walk!
There is a small museum display in the windows of the station and the station gardens are wonderfully looked after. It’s an infrequent train service at Dumfries but they have made it a nice place to wait for your train to arrive!
Dumfries station is one hour and forty-five minutes from Glasgow Central and less than 45 minutes from Carlise.
The station is staffed throughout the day with toilets open into the evening. There is separate level access to both platforms.
