The Ness Islands are a collection of small islands in the middle of the River Ness – connected by Victorian suspension bridges they combine imported tree-lined paths with the fast flowing riverside.
River Ness Walk
The walk here from Inverness Station is slightly over a mile following the river along Castle Road, Ness Bank and Ladies Walk and is included in the Great Glen Way long distance footpath. The river is wide, shallow and fast passing hotels & restaurants with views of St Andrew’s Cathedral and Victorian villas on the opposite banks.
The Ness Islands themselves can be a circular walk or cross all of the bridges to return the other side of the river. There are benches to stop at, little spots to be near the water’s edge and usually plenty dogs to make friends with.
Inverness Castle?!
Yes, Inverness has a castle but when we visited it was covered in scaffolding. Rudy had been here before though and kind of got a photo with the castle. Not a very successful “tourist selfie” though!
