Glasgow to Carlisle (West Coast Main Line)

Rudy has visited eight of the ten stations we count on the Glasgow to Carlisle (West Coast Main Line) route.

Rudy had been on trains here a dozen times before ever starting to keep track so deciding on an "official visit" date for Scotland's busiest station was tricky! We've chosen a day we went to show solidarity with striking rail workers in June 2022. We caught the bus there and walked home.

Shieldmuir

From Wikipedia : Shieldmuir railway station is a railway station in the Craigneuk suburb of Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, and lies on the West Coast Main Line, although it is not served by mainline services – local commuter services from the station are provided via the Argyle Line by ScotRail on behalf of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport. The station is close to Wishaw railway station. The bulk of commuters are from the nearby suburbs of Craigneuk and Muirhouse, which it spans the border between. The bridge used to cross the railway also connects the two towns. Although Shieldmuir can be used to reach Wishaw General Hospital by train, it and Wishaw station are both a considerable distance away for any visitors there.

Carstairs ✓

A timetable oddity meant we had half an hour to explore around Carstairs station before getting back on the exact same train service! The strictest Railway Challenge Rules wouldn't approve but for us half an hour is a proper walk - and the oddness trumps the rules :)

Carlisle

From Wikipedia : Carlisle railway station, or Carlisle Citadel, is a Grade II* listed railway station serving the cathedral city of Carlisle, Cumbria, England. It is on the West Coast Main Line, 102 miles (164 km) south-east of Glasgow Central and 299 miles (481 km) north north-west of London Euston. It is the northern terminus of the Settle and Carlisle Line, a continuation of the Midland Main Line from Leeds, Sheffield and London St Pancras. It was formerly the southern terminus of the partially-reopened Waverley Route from Edinburgh. It is so named because it is adjacent to Carlisle Citadel, a former medieval fortress (not to be confused with Carlisle Castle). The station is owned by Network Rail.
