Rudy’s first adventure at a Kyle Line station was at Stromeferry. We didn’t go far, just down to the harbour beach for a picnic lunch and to marvel at the wonderful Scottish highlands scenery.
Loch Carron
Loch Carron is a sea loch stretching more than 20km (12.5 miles) in Wester Ross. It separates two remote peninsulas and it’s narrows at Stromeferry were once busy with ferries. Rudy was alone in snuffling through the seaweed when he visited though.
Stromeferry
The ferry between North Strome and Stromeferry was the main road traffic route to Skye right up until a new “bypass” was constructed along the south side of the loch in 1970. This meant the last of the ferries were no longer needed and so the road sadly sign posts “Strome Ferry (no ferry)”.
The Stromeferry Riot took place here in 1883 when two hundred local fishermen occupied the station to prevent fish being transported by the new railway company on their Sabbath Sunday, it became so serious it required the army to calm things.
