One dog, one railway, one heck of an adventure!

Dumfries: River Nith

A walk along the River Nith

For our visit to Dumfries railway station we took a walk along the River Nith from the countryside views near Edinburgh Road along the riverside path to St. Michaels Bridge in the town centre.

In the South West of Scotland the River Nith flows from East Ayrshire, through Dumfries & Galloway, and into the Solway Firth. It ranks as Scotland’s seventh longest river and we’ll also be visiting upstream parts of it near other railway stations but for now it’s a short afternoon walk in Dumfries.

The river is very peaceful on the northern side of Dumfries but the path does have some very narrow places between a high wall and a rather precipitous drop down into the river. It’s fine. Unless you worry about heights/drops or have to squeeze past other people & dogs heading the other way.

Devorgilla Bridge

The first bridge over the Nith at Dumfries was built around 1270 on instructions from Lady Devorgilla and each replacement has kept the name – the current bridge dates mostly from the 17th & 18th Centuries. Rudy tried to get a tourist selfie just himself but a very patient photographer was taking pictures of a wonderful trio of herons in the river!

Dumfries Town & Robert Burns House

Dumfries is the largest town in south west Scotland it’s main focus for tourism seems to be around Robert Burns who spent the last years of his life living in the town with many murals dotted around the two streets depicting his life and works.
