One dog, one railway, one heck of an adventure!

Crookston Castle

Rudy at Crookston Castle

Crookston Castle is the only medieval castle left within the Glasgow City boundary. The site is where Sir Robert Croc built his wooden fortress in the 1100s leading to the name “Croc’s Town”, Crookston!

The surviving ruin dates from a stone castle built on the site during the 1400s. The remaining section is mostly one corner of a unique design that had four small towers surrounding the main central living tower.

In 1931 the castle became the first ever National Trust for Scotland property until it was passed on to Historic Environment Scotland in the 1960s.

Rudy had a great time exploring the lower castle rooms and climbing the dark spiral staircase up to the banqueting hall (now very al fresco!) but the ladder to the top tower viewpoint was not for him!

Some visitors to Crookston Castle choose to read the information panels and learn some history while others choose to roll around daft in the grass. Which are you?

Crookston Castle is looked after by Historic Environment Scotland and is free to visit but opening times vary daily throughout the year.
You can read more about it’s history on their website at https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/crookston-castle/history/
