Rudy's Railway Adventures

One dog, one railway, one heck of an adventure!

A River Clyde Detour

Rudy at the River Clyde.

Rudy’s walk from Carmyle to Newton included a two mile detour along the River Clyde & back to get from one end of the Westburn Viaduct to the other.

A Wee Drink?

The River Clyde is famous for its ship building and for daytrips doon the watter but not for the quality of its water. Nobody told Rudy so he was intent on trying a wee drink – can confirm he survived but now thinks better of drinking from his water bottle we carry for him! 😂

This part of the river is still very much within the Glasgow urban area but the first part of our detour (on the northern bank) was sheltered from the city sprawl with much more of a rural feel even on the well surfaced path.

We went past the busy A763 road bridge at Clydeford to cross the river nearer Cambuslang. The road bridge here has been closed for many years giving a safe walking choice between it and it’s pedestrian companion.

The South Bank

After crossing the river we turned back eastwards. This path is part of the Clyde Walkway proper, we thought it more a functional connecting route and not as nice a walk as the opposite bank for this part of the river.

The search for a picnic spot!

What we didn’t expect was there to be no benches to rest or easy to reach picnic spots on the river’s edge for this stretch which meant we rather had to just make do in the end.

(Of course there were plenty nice spots just further along after we gave up and already eaten…!)

The section south of the river is part of the official Clyde Walkway route.
