Perth is an unusual station, it's a major junction with over 130 trains per day running to all of Scotland's big cities, Edinburgh, Inverness, Glasgow & Aberdeen. Up to a million passengers and 100,000 interchanges use the station each year but it's always felt empty & ghostly quiet when we've changed trains here! The station was first opened in 1848 and grew to become possibly the busiest junction station in Scotland. As routes were closed down in the 1960s the station remained important but spread out over a larger footprint than needed. The original 1848 buildings still stand but with a 1911 train shed covering the original exterior façade and the grandest waiting rooms relegated to staff only, it's now the 1880s easterly addition that sees most use. It's at the most impressive top-end for Category B Listed with even the newer platforms retaining extensive canopies and covered footbridge.
