Newton-on-Ayr was opened in 1864 on the Ayr and Dalmellington Railway. Although on the Ayrshire Coast Line the station is separated from the coast by a railway junction and goods yard that once brought coal into Ayr Harbour. The brick station building dates from the 1950s but has been closed for several decades with all the windows and doors blocked up.
